Description

Another Abell... Abell 33 (PK238+34.1) in Rha-GOIII-BOIII Most stars with masses similar to that of our Sun will end their existence in the form of white dwarfs, small bodies, dense and hot at the same time, whose temperature gradually decreases over billions of years.During this final phase of their existence, they expel their atmosphere into the surrounding space, thereby generating planetary nebulae, i.e. envelopes of particularly bright and colorful gas around a bright, small stellar residue. The image reveals the remarkable circular contours of the planetary nebula Abell 33, located some 2,500 light-years from Earth. Such perfect sphericity is unusual for this type of object because often a factor disturbs this symmetry and the planetary nebula displays irregular contours. The rotation of the star or its belonging to a double or multiple star system can for example be a source of disturbance. The presence of a surprisingly bright star on the outer edge of the nebula creates a magnificent optical illusion. This is a totally fortuitous alignment: the star, named HD 83535, is actually in the foreground of the nebula, halfway or almost between Earth and Abell 33. At this precise place, it magnifies the image obtained. The combination of these two objects, HD 83535 on the one hand and Abell 33 on the other, forms a sparkling diamond ring. The remnant of the star that gave birth to Abell 33 is about to become a white dwarf. It appears as a milky pearl near the center of the nebula. It is still bright because its luminosity is greater than that of our own Sun and emits enough ultraviolet radiation to illuminate the ejected material. We prefer this version with Ha and OIII because the nebula has the good color blue-greenish for OIII. (from Futura science)
